VOL: National Park Service and Mississippi Park Connection

NationalParkHappy 2019! The new year flurry of activity has begun. The calendar is filling up with winter activities including Winter River training dates and field trip dates! We are busy planning ahead for the spring and summer.

The park is beginning to identify future conditions and uses for the Coldwater Spring area – the 29-acre park site south of Minnehaha Falls Regional Park. With the help of our dedicated volunteers, the NPS has restored 13 acres of native prairie and oak savanna landscapes, and daylighted a portion of the Coldwater Creek, on what had been an abandoned research camp. Through these restoration activities and through ongoing input from volunteers and other members of the public, the NPS has been studying potential approaches to stewarding the Coldwater Spring area into the future. The park plans to present ideas to the public in winter 2019. There will be opportunities to formally comment on ideas and proposals.
