VOL: River Bend Nature Center

RiverBendNatureCenterRiver Bend Nature Center is currently recruiting people to join our team of Volunteer Naturalists! Please read on to learn more about us and this fabulous opportunity.

River Bend Nature Center is a non-profit day-use nature center in the city of Faribault, Minnesota. It was established in the late 1970s as a 501 (c)(3) educational non-profit dedicated to helping people discover, enjoy, understand and preserve the natural world. The nature center encompasses 743 acres cradling the Straight River. There are 10 miles of multi-use hiking trails available for skiing, snowshoeing, and biking.

Volunteering at River Bend Nature Center is an opportunity to not only help engage the community with the outdoors, but also to share knowledge and passion. River Bend is an ideal setting to meet Minnesota Master Naturalist volunteer service requirements with a variety of volunteer opportunities in core areas including stewardship projects, education/interpretive projects, citizen science and program support.

River Bend is currently seeking passionate individuals to join our staff as Volunteer Naturalists for schools, public programs, special groups such as the YMCA, and our special events throughout the year.

What is a Volunteer Naturalist?

Over 7,000 elementary school students visit the center each year experiencing a unique field trip taught by staff and trained volunteers. A desire to learn more about nature and a willingness to share your enthusiasm and knowledge with the students is all you need. Prior experience is not necessary, training is provided that covers not only curriculum and activities, but also how to work with different age groups and abilities.

Volunteers also have the opportunity to lead and/or plan programs or nature walks for the public programs. For example, a Master Naturalist capstone project was to conduct public wildflower hikes and perform a talk about wildflowers for our OWLS(Older Wiser Livelier Seniors) Lunch &Learn program.
