Minnesota DNR recently finalized and has begun implementing its first ever state-wide strategic deer management plan. The Minnesota White-tailed Deer Management Plan will be used to prioritize agency resources and activities related to deer over the next ten years. (2019-2028). The plan was developed by DNR over a two-year period based on recommendations from a citizen advisory committee and public input. We will highlight the goals most pertinent to forest resource managers including communication, population management, healthy habitat, and impact to other resources, as well as describe the 200,000 deer harvest target.
Other topics including deer feeding, deer browse impacts, and maintaining hunter numbers will also be mentioned. Early implementation efforts, including opportunities to become involved, will be discussed based on the plan’s near-term strategies.
