Long Lake is starting to plan its 2018 Community Outreach Programs and would like to partner with our local Master Naturalists to come up with a Milkweed and Monarch series of citizen science events at Long Lake Conservation Center.
We would like to start the series in early June and have it end at our Open House in late August with monitoring events every couple of weeks in between to follow the life cycle stages of the monarch. We’d like these events to be a chance for master naturalists to get their volunteer hours and help inform and guide the public on how to conduct their own citizen science at home.
We are looking for 2 Master Naturalists to take the lead on coordinating these events and leading the study. Long Lake can provide meeting space, equipment, and support; and specimens can be left at the new Long Lake Monarch house where they will be cared for by our staff.
Please let me know if you are interested in leading or participating in this project. We are still in the planning stage and would appreciate any help or feedback in the process. If you would like to lead any other community program based on your knowledge or interests other than monarchs please let me know as well.
Also, I want to bring your attention to our upcoming Master Naturalist North Woods, Great Lakes course being offered at Long Lake on the 22nd through the 26th of January. If you know of anyone interested in taking this class please forward the link below:
If you would like to volunteer in some way during the course (host, present, chauffeur, etc) please let me know as soon as you can.
Thanks,
Erik Heimark
